Hoping for the Best

I have plenty of work to keep me busy, but I must admit, I'm having trouble thinking about anything other than the mystery ship we've just encountered. Even though I've been in Starfleet for a while now, I still get butterflies when encountering the unknown. It's a strange mix of emotions. Are we about to discover something amazing? Threatening? Prior to joining the fleet, I didn't think it was possible to feel dread and excitement at the same time, but I have felt it too often to doubt it by now. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, depending on how one looks at it, I don't have to be in command and control to know what's happening. Every time there's new information, I receive an alert to my office console. Incidentally, every time I hear that beep, I released a breath I didn't even know I was holding.

Despite our best efforts, it appears we don't know much more about the ship than we did when we started. It doesn't appear to be the Rio Grande but there is some evidence to suggest that the ship appears to be Federation in origin. Then again, there is also evidence to suggest, at least on the outside, a number of cultures have contributed to the construction of the vessel. What that means for us or for the ship's crew is yet to be determined, but I can’t help but feel a bit apprehensive about it.

I know the infirmary is on alert just in case there are injured, and rather than sit here and speculate the worst, I think I’ll head there and see how I can help with the preparations.
