Quandry

The Starbase has a new officer. Nothing unusual in that; I expect we’ll get a lot of new personal in the wake of the Gorn/Tholian war. This one is a joined Trill by the name of Ensign Kriss Max. Nothing unusual in that either.
So much for the commonplace. What is ringing alarm bells is that Ensign Max was assigned to the medical staff – he is, apparently, a trained doctor. However, no sooner was the appointment ratified than he requested a transfer to Comms. I can understand people shifting around within the staff but medical to Comms? That’s a major jump!
That’s what concerns me. I might be wrong but I’m concerned that Max has Davares’ Syndrome. It occurs when the symbiont takes over the life of the host. Rather than the relationship between host and symbiont being...well, symbiotic, it becomes parasitic. It is, thankfully, very rare but it can occur and the effects are usually devastating for both host and symbiont. I’ve only ever met one other Trill with Davares’ Syndrome and that was only fleeting. She was on her way back to Trill for treatment and rehabilitation. I tried later to find out what happened to her but no-one would say. That isn’t at all uncommon with the Symbiont Commission – they tend to play mute at the first hint of scandal – but it didn’t bode well. It implied she’d lost the symbiont and that the symbiont had been denied a new host.
How do I go about finding out though? It’s my duty as a fellow joined Trill to help if I can but I can’t just walk up and say Excuse me, have you got Davares’ Syndrome? It’s a bit like saying I hear you’ve got a venereal disease. Could I ask which one? or asking a Klingon without a crest if he’s one of those genetic mutants. You just don’t do it in polite society.
I thought of asking Thalal for her advice but decided against it. This is way outside her experience – hell, it’s outside my own experience. Anyway, she’ll be heading off to Andor soon to procreate. She’s only waiting for official confirmation that her request for extended leave has been granted.
Maybe if I just introduce himself and watch for tell-tale signs.... After all, there might be a perfectly reasonable explanation why Ensign Max has switched from the medical staff to communications. If I play it that way, though, I know I’ll feel like a voyeur and a fraud.
What to do? What to do?
