Getting the message out

Posted on Mon Aug 1st, 2011 @ 5:19pm by Chief Warrant Officer Akina Jrez

Mission: Into The Scorpion's Nest. Season 2, Episode 5
Location: Comms station, U.S.S. Illustrious

"Captain Sedgwick suggested last night that we send a message ship to ship but," Jrez told Lam, "having slept on it, I'm not sure it's a good idea. We have no way of controlling where such a message goes once we've broadcast it and, therefore, no way of knowing who's receiving it. Eventually, the parasites will get it and, for all we know, they might be the very first ship that does get it.

"I'd like to suggest an alternative. I can send out two innocuous looking messages - ones that read like I'm sending a greeting to a loved one. They need not be large. However, each will contain a phrase alerting the recipient to the fact that there is a second message embedded in it. One I will send to Andor, the other to Trill. Neither will contain the whole message. That way, if one message does fall into the wrong hands - which I fully expect it will - and the embedded message is found - which, quite frankly, I doubt but we must allow for the contingency - then the parasites still won't be able to make sense of it."

Lam liked the sound that. Now all they had to do was figure out how to make it happen. Sedgwick had gone to the Admirals and been told, as Lam was in turn, that no ship could be spared. This plan had to work as there was no back up.

"How do you suggest we do this," she asked. "Sure, it reduces the risk of discovery but are you sure we can trust these people. How do you know them?"

"One will go to a...former lover...who is now a member of the Andorian Imperial Guard. I will categorically vouch for her. She will know what to do to put the messages back together. The other will go to my mother. She will wait for contact with Thalal zh'Simal and follow instructions. That having been done, she will approach the Symbiont Commission. Both she and her partner are well respected and will be listened to."

"Sounds like you've really thought this through, Chief." Sara smiled, "Let's get it done. The fleet has been ordered to get under way once the repairs to the Citak are complete, which should be a in the next few hours, from what I've heard." With the comm systems of the Illustrious providing them with all of the tools they would ever need, now all they needed was time.
