Mission: Purgatory's Shadow. Season 2 Episode 7
Location: Vadrek's quarters

“I have heard nothing,” Vadrek repeated. This was becoming boring. “There have been no reports received here of the nature – or result – of whatever Commander T’Rena is doing.” He could feel his frustration rising. He fought to keep it under control. “When I have something to report, I will do so. In the meantime, I do not propose to unnecessarily bother you.”

“You will report when you are ordered,” an imperious voice instructed.

“No,” Vadrek replied firmly. “I will report when I see fit.”

“If you do not obey commands you will be recalled to Cardassia.”

“And that is meant to be a threat?” Vadrek made no attempt to hide his scorn. “And who will you get to replace me? Some lick-spittle lackey who doesn’t know his arse from his head? You need someone who can tell intelligence from gossip; fact from rumour; information from supposition. Find someone else and I’ll happily leave. Cardassia never could build decent stations and the Federation is happily ruining what little good there was here. I’d rather be doing something worth my talents. Face it, we’re stuck with each other. Goodbye.”

He signed off with a sharp jab at the comms button. Why do I put up with these idiots?

The answer did not need giving. He was a bastard. He would always be a bastard. He was tolerated because he was better than most of what passed for Cardassia’s intelligence service. But that was all he was: tolerated. Still, he reflected, knowledge is strength.

The knowledge of who and what he was gave Vadrek deep strength.
