Into The Unknown

Mission: Purgatory's Shadow. Season 2 Episode 7
Location: USS Steadfast

ON

< Bridge, USS Steadfast >

Standing, Burkeson began to pace, thinking.

"Pat." he said, as soon as those coordinates come in, lay in a course and get us headed that way, warp 9."

"Only warp 9, Sir?" the helmsman asked.

"That's correct." Burkeson said, sounding a little annoyed, "I'm not pushing this ship any harder that I have to until I get a full crew on her and shake her out a bit. Even far less cranky ships than ours usually need some fine-tuning right out of the yard post-refit to really get things together. Defiants usually need about three times as much. Warp 9 will get us there plenty fast."

"Coordinates coming in now, Commander." Pat said, "Approximately three light years away, right on the Neutral Zone. Course laid in and implementing at warp 9. ETA about fifteen hours."

Burkeson felt the subtle indicators through the deck and in the gravity field as the ship pivoted in space and accelerated.

"Very good, Pat." Burkeson said, walking up to the Flight Control/Ops station, "Now consider yourself relieved. Report to your quarters and grab some rest. I need everyone sharp when we get there. I'll watch the controls."

"Aye, Sir." the Ensign replied wearily, "Thanks."

As he left the bridge, Burkeson slid into the vacated seat and logged onto the control console with his personal code. This not only set the panel configurations to his personal settings but also enabled further functions and displays that would not have been available to a non-Command officer at the panel. Activating the comm system, he spoke.

"Burkeson to Fraser."

"Go for Fraser."

"Chief, we've been ordered into action." Rolandson said, then spoke quickly to override the angry outburst on the other end of the channel, "I know, I know...belay that for now. Plenty of time to bitch later. Right now, we need to maximize our readiness. Find out who in the Engineering gang has had the most sleep the most recently and put them on watch down there, then put the rest of the crew to sleep. Issue cortical stimulator as needed to make sure they sleep. I just woke up, so I'm going to watch the bridge. Once they've been bedded down come on up here and I'll brief you."

"Aye, Sir...I'm on it."
