"Ready to clear moorings, Captain."

"Very well, Lieutenant...make it so." Stiles said, accepting a PADD from his yeoman as he responded to the duty Flight Control officer, "Take us to the outer marker, then lay in a course to the specified coordinates, best speed."

"Aye, Captain."

Randolph Stiles examined the contents of the PADD, the standard mix of port-departure documents and standing orders. He scanned each document like a computer, taking in the repetitive content automatically, his attention only stopping to focus on anomalies. There were few of these; he ran a tight ship. And what a ship it was...Sovereign Class, one of the premiere ships of the fleet. Starfleet had, of course, many different classes of ships, all with important functions, but it was in these big, purpose built explorers that he felt it's true soul lay. Beginning with the Constitution class and proceeding on through the Excelsior, Ambassador and Galaxy classes, the lineage of his ship and it's mission defined the very purpose of Starfleet. Before the Constitutions arrived, there was a distinct gulf between warships and exploratory vessels and the brave crews of those early explorers paid the price for this as they pushed the boundaries of Federation knowledge out farther and faster than the reach of the military. Only with the massive technological leaps of the Great Awakening did it become possible to create a vessel that blended both functions. And even then, none before had blended them as well as the Sovereign.

Equipped with the latest technology in both ship systems and scientific capabilities, the ship also bristled with weapons. Sixteen of the most powerful phaser arrays ever mounted on a starship and nine torpedo launchers covered the ship from every angle. Regenerative shielding was backed up with ablative hull armor to make the ship highly survivable. As no class before her, the Sovereign could explore the galaxy with little fear of what it might encounter.

"At outer marker, Captain." the Flight Control officer stated, "All systems ready for maximum warp. ETA to objective approximately eight hours."

Stiles nodded. 'Well within our sprint capabilities', he mused.

"Very well." he said, "Open a channel to station control."

"Aye, Captain." and then, moments later, in another voice, "Deep Space Twelve Control."

"Control..." Stiles said, "USS Garrett ready for departure. Thank you for your hospitality."

"Our pleasure, Garrett. Clear skies."

"Thank you...Garrett out." Stiles replied. Then, addressing the helm, he added, "Give her a kick, Lieutenant."

The stars on the viewscreen blurred into streaks as the Garrett's powerful engines kicked in, accelerating her rapidly to warp 9.95.

Stiles closed his eyes and felt the vibrations of his ship as she found her stride. Then, after a few minutes, he stood and addressed the communications officer.

"I'll be in my ready room. Please contact the COs of the other responding vessels and coordinate a teleconference for thirty minutes from now."

"Aye, Captain."

And, without another word, Stiles left the bridge.
