Entering sickbay, Burkeson nearly stumbled over one of the supply cases scattered about the small area. Covering the slight stumble, he scooped it up. 'Plasma burn dressings...' he mused, eying the label, 'Not a good omen.'

"Where do you want these, Lieutenant?" he asked the newly arrived Medical officer.

Nicholas O'Reily spun surprised at the new voice, "Here I'll take them." he called moving toward Burkeson on four stride. "I'm sorry sir," he continued relieving him of the parcel. "There's quite a limited amount of space around here. Something I'm not really used to."

"Yeah, she's small." Burkeson replied, "One primary bed and two recovery ones. My guess is they figured if too many of one of these little firecracker's crew got hospitalized, we'd all be goners pretty quick anyway. Plus, given the firepower it would take to hammer down her shields and breach the ablative armor, there's a strong possibility of a cascade overload from the capacitors blowing the ship up anyway." Noting the other officer's expression, he added, "If you think this is bad, you should see the Science lab!" and winked.

Nick's expression had changed throughout the explanation, from being sincere, to uncomfortable to amusement. Instantly he liked the Commander. "Sounds like I've got the better deal after all," he smirked.

"So tell me about yourself, Lieutenant." Burkeson said, "I only have a few minutes just now but I think they'd be well-spent getting to know a little bit about the man who might be holding a laser scalpel over me in the next couple of days."

"I hope it won't come to that Commander," came a serious reply. "Primarily because I'm more of counselor than a physician." Sensing the grow trepidation from his words Nick continued quickly; "I'm competent field medic, practicing surgeon, shadowed three CMO's among other things."

Burkeson nodded. "Well, a field medic is probably what we'll need this hop, if anything." he said, "And probably a counselor too. Defiant duty is stressful under normal conditions. Going into a crisis with a short, mostly new crew...well, I suggest you install a couch at first opportunity." He thought a moment, then added with a wink, "Attaching restraints might not be a bad idea either."

"I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze one in somewhere," the Betazoid hybrid smiled lightly relieved that Burkeson was simply taking everything in his stride.

"Good." Burkeson said, with another grin, "Book me the first appointment!"

=^= Rattei to Burkeson =^=

Tapping his comm badge, David replied, "Speak to me, Oh noble Reepicheep!"

=^= That's racist, Sir. If it were anyone but you... =^=

"That's why I do it, my good Petty Officer. Someone needs to keep that ego of yours trimmed. What's up?"

=^= Got some issues in the replication center you might want to look at. =^=

"On my way. Burkeson out." Then, turning back to O'Reily he added, "Apologies for the brief discussion, Counselor. I'm sure we'll have more time to talk later but, for now, duty calls. If I know Rattei, 'some issues' could mean anything from an unauthorized replicator hack to an imminent explosion. You need anything, ask anybody and see me if they don't jump!"

This last was said over his shoulder as he strode from the briskly from the room.
