A polite enquiry

Mission: Trouble on the frontier

Harrison had nothing pressing on his plate. All reports suggested the crew was settling in nicely on the new station but he thought this might be a good time to take a look for himself.

Stepping out of his office, he paused briefly to nod to Stills and McKenna. Having only recently chatted with them, he moved on.

As he was walking towards the main part of the Promenade, he spotted a Romulan approaching from the other direction. He slowed, allowing the woman to come to him.

“Sub-Commander...Valk'o, is it not?” Harrison asked. "I am sorry but I have not had the opportunity to make your acquaintance."

Valk'o stopped, stunned that any of the Starfleet staff dared to speak to her. Her mood was levelled when she recognized the Station Commander. "Captain," she said with a curt nod, "pleasure to meet you."

“How are you settling in?” Harrison asked politely. “Are your quarters to your satisfaction?”

"They are sufficient," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“I am glad to hear it but....” Harrison considered the reply. “....‘sufficient’ does not sound like it would meet the needs of an Ambassador. I would have though Madame Mirok would prefer something grand or opulent; something that speaks to the prestige of the Star Empire.”

The woman seemed shocked, but was then snapped back to a purpose that had escaped her thoughts. "Of course," she said, "The Ambassador wanted me to deliver to you news of her renovation plans."

She regarded the Captain with Romulan scrutiny. "They are well underway for the entire Embassy complex."

“Good,” Harrison said. “I presume you have them with you.” He held out his hand.

Reluctantly, "Yes Captain," she said, producing a PADD.

“Normally, they would go through Ops, of course,” Harrison reminded Valk'o, “but you are new to the station so I think we can make an exception in this instance. I will have Lieutenant Stills look them over with a view to providing the necessary materials.”

"That won't be necessary, Captain. The Ambassador is having materials sourced from all over the Empire." She looked quite smug, "Only the finest will do for the Romulan Embassy."

Harrison smiled. “I look forward to seeing the complex when it is finished.” His face immediately took on a more sombre appearance and his voice dropped a couple of tones. “I have heard that there is an extensive black market in Romulan artifacts since the Hobus incident. I am pleased that some pieces will not suffer that fate. However, you misunderstand me. I meant things like support beams, nuts and bolts, that sort of thing.”

"Ah," she said, raising an eyebrow," I'll keep that in mind."

“Thank you. Now, if you will excuse me....”

"Of Course." She said, her eyes still fixed on the Human captain.
