Into the War

Posted on Thu Jul 7th, 2016 @ 1:29pm by Ensign T'ami Lo'Wen & Lieutenant Commander Soraya Delrisa

Mission: Trouble on the frontier
Location: Away Mission

T'ami had found herself a bunk amongst the crew quarters, and introduced herself around to the other Gaspar volunteers. However while talking to them, she had become aware that they had been prepared and planned for this mission, whereas she was a last minute arrival. She had no idea what she supposed to do when they got there.

The Caitian changed into civilian attire, as per the mission brief, and made her way through the ship to the mission commander's quarters. She hoped the Doctor wouldn't mind the interruption.

She buzzed the door chime and waited, absent-mindedly stroking her hand through her long black hair.

"Enter," Soraya said. The door slid open and T'ami saw the olive-skinned woman sitting on a couch with a padd in her hands.

T'ami instinctively gave a short bow, "Sorry to interrupt, Doctor, I'm Ensign Lo'Wen, Assistant Chief Diplo officer on DS12."

"Welcome, Ensign, what can I do for you?" the doctor asked with a smile.

"Well I've joined the mission at the last minute," T'ami replied sheepishly, "I basically went straight from arriving on the station to jumping onboard here,"

"You need a briefing?"

"Yeah and I just needed an assignment for when we arrive," the Caitian shrugged, "I have basic medical training, and as a Diplomat I am fluent in several languages if necessary. Just put me where you need me," she laughed.

"Please have a seat," Soraya said, motioning towards the couch. "So, basic medical training... have you been in a war zone before?"

"Not a real one, Ma'am," T'ami replied, taking a seat on the couch. She slinked down onto the soft cushion, resting her right arm across the back. "Though I have done simulations in a holodeck as required for a internship on a colony settlement I did once."

"Where I'm weak right now is triage. I have some excellent medics and nurses but I can't spare many of them for triage because the worst of the surgeries will need to get underway when we arrive. The Surgical Unit is the first to be put up and supplied, and we're setting up camps in three different areas when we land. I have some volunteers who are going through triage training and the first class is in an hour, I can add you to the roster. I'll warn you Ensign, it isn't a job for the squeamish."

The Ensign took a deep breath, her mind flashing towards possible scenarios that she was about to experience. She'd be lying if she said she didn't regret jumping on board. That little voice of self preservation told her she was a fool for volunteering. Doubt, her old friend, reared its ugly head for a moment. Could she do this? Is it too late now to find a nice quiet desk role somewhere?

'No', she resolved in her mind. People were counting on them for support and treatment, she couldn't do nothing while people suffered. And she didn't want to let her new crew-mates down. Finally she put a solemn smile on her face for the Doctor.

"I would appreciate the triage training, Ma'am," She replied. "I'm prepared for what's to come."

Soraya smiled as her motherly instincts took over. She touched the younger woman's arm gently. "It can get a bit... brutal, but it is also rewarding. You'll calm frightened people, provide minor treatment, even help midwife. We have a training class in an hour in the cargo bay."

T'ami was relieved by the Doctor's comforting words. "I experienced some brutality on my last mission." She lightly touched her neck, the hands of the madman who tried to choke her still fresh in her mind. "I hope to bring some comfort to others. I'll take whatever training I can."

The Caitian smiled, "Thank you for your advice and understanding, Doctor. Do we have any more info on who could do such an atrocious thing to a civilian settlement?"

"Not so far as I know, but Security may have a better idea. Originally intel said there was a natural disaster, I believe," the doctor said. "Forgive my manners, would you like something to drink?"

T'ami frowned a little, playing with the end of her long dark hair, "Magnus - I mean Ambassador Temple - and I had heard a rumour of possible Klingon involvement. The sheer idea of that is too horrible to be true, I hope it's just a crazy rumour."

Soraya caught her breath... Klingon involvement?

She considered the Doctor's offer for a moment before politely shaking her head, "I don't want to impose on you for too long, Lieutenant Commander. You have been so kind already."

"It's my pleasure, Ensign. If you'd need to talk my door is always open, but I suspect there won't be much time for talking when we're planet-side."

T'ami nodded, "I suspect so. I just hope I won't let you guys down."

The Caitian stood, straightened out her uniform and gave the Lieutenant Commander a big smile, "Thank you so much Doctor, I appreciate you spending the time to see me, and get me caught up. I'm really looking forward to those training sessions."

Soraya cocked her head at the young woman, considering her for a moment.

"I'm glad to hear that, Ensign Lo'wen, and I know you won't let us down. I think you're already an asset to the team."

T'ami smiled again and exited the room. She let out a big sigh of relief and made her way down to the training room.
