In at the deep end

Mission: Trouble on the frontier
Location: Captain's office

Nizan double checked his appearance in a viewport, before continuing to the CO's office. He didn't get nervous that often, but this was one of the few times he did. He tried to calm his nerves, unsuccessfully, and pressed the chime. After hearing the command to enter, he stepped into the office.

Harrison waited until the two new officers were still. “Please, be seated,” he said. “Would you like some refreshments?”

Nizan took a seat an shook his head. "No thank you."

Davis echoed Nizan's reply before sitting.

“I am afraid you will not have time to settle in to your new posting. You have probably already heard about the attack on Gaspar. What you might not be aware of is the subsequent bombing. Someone set up what looked to be Federation Aid Stations. They waited until the stations were full then set off remote control explosives. The casualty toll was horrific. What is worse, from a diplomatic point of view – and this is why Starfleet has been at pains to keep it out of the news – is that the incidents were filmed. There is a pirate group which is using the holovideos as part of a sophisticated anti-Federation propaganda campaign.”

Looking at both the Captain and Nizan. "What is Starfleet intending to do, Sir?"

“You will both be going to Gaspar; you are needed there much more than here. Lieutenant Davis, your platoon will be part of the recovery team. Your primary focus will be helping the Gasparians to resume some semblance of normal lives. You will be assisting with building homes, water collection facilities, that sort of thing. Lieutenant Nizan, you will have a similar role. It will be, if you like, much like what the Federation did on Bajor after the Occupation ended. I know that sounds like you will be both doing much the same thing but I trust you know your own roles well enough to understand the difference. Lieutenant Nizan, I want you to keep your ears open. Any information on what happened could be vital. Lieutenant Davis, you and yours will be a vital part of our peacekeeping role. I gather feelings are running high on Gaspar and the Federation is not well liked. You will need to keep that in mind at all times. The last thing we need is an incident that the Federation really does cause.”

"I won't let this be a repeat of Bajor. The Federation did a lot for us after the Cardassians left, and anything to repay that, and prevent another Occupation, will be my primary goal." Nizan was passionate about preventing the kind of losses Bajor suffered.

"I'll have my platoon ready to move out in about 20 minutes, Captain." Pausing for a brief moment. "I figure between LT Rydit's security team and my Marines we can complete our mission in short order. What do you think, Lieutenant?"

"Sounds about right. I can round up some hands and we can head over as soon as ready, sir." Nizan was already going over a list of people he could pick.
