A new assignment

Posted on Fri Jun 3rd, 2016 @ 3:32am by Captain Nelson Harrison & Chief Warrant Officer Akina Jrez

Mission: Trouble on the frontier
Location: Captain's office

CWO Jrez pulled himself up to his full height before pressing the chime on the door to Captain Harrison’s office. Even now, he was not sure if this was the right thing to do. No, amend was the right thing, he just wasn’t sure if it was the sensible one. Combat experience was many years behind him and here he was....

No time for second thoughts now, Akina, the second Jrez host, Tirania, said in her lilting voice. Jrez took a deep breath and exhaled slowly then stepped through the door.

“What might I do for you, Chief?” Harrison asked, looking up from a pile of PADDs.

“I would like to volunteer for the Gaspar mission.”

“I cannot say as how I am surprised. Your expertise could prove useful for the relief teams.”

“You mistake me, Sir. I want to be assigned to one of the Marine teams.”

Harrison’s jaw could not exactly be said to drop, not physically anyway. Jrez gained the distinct impression that it metaphorically did so. “Combat, Chief?”

“I hope not, sir. But I do have the experience.”

“During the Dominion War, if I recall correctly. That was some time ago.”

“Yes, sir, but my record speaks for itself. More to the point, my ‘expertise’ would be more useful in the field than in an aid station. I’m a...a jack-of-all-trades, is the term I think you humans use. I’m good at repairing equipment with odd bits and pieces scrounged from...well, wherever I can find them. In the aid stations, they’ll have the latest state-of-the-art equipment and spare parts aplenty. They won’t need me.”

“I can not say as how I necessarily agree but, very well.... Report to Lieutenant Davis. He is newly arrived on the station and is putting together a team. I will draw up the necessary orders and forward them to him.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“Do not thank me too soon, Chief, you might come to regret it.”

Of that, I do not need reminding, Jrez thought as he left the office.
