The Light is Green

Posted on Tue Oct 18th, 2016 @ 2:45am by Chief Warrant Officer Akina Jrez

Mission: Trouble on the frontier
Location: DS12/Gaspar

Lieutenant Davis led his platoon to the assembly point, the Marines behind him were walking in column of twos. A few people stopped to watch them pass, some waved, others just remarked at their presence. Davis’ Marines were cheerful, most chatting as they made their way.

As they reached the point, Davis order them to halt and standby as he and the Platoon Sergeant went the last few yards to check if everything was ready. Chief Jrez approached with the details of where they would set up the next station.

“Chief.” Kevin reached out to shake the NCO’s hand. “Looks like we’re all ready. Let’s kick the tires and light the fires!” Kevin turned to his Platoon Sergeant. “Staff Sergeant, bring ‘em up and mount ‘em up.”

Jrez was still getting used to military discipline and the snap with which Marines did things. He was also still feeling sore in muscles he’d forgotten he had. He was thankful for all those long runs on the holodeck but the drills the Staff Sergeant put the grunts through were something else again. He fell into line beside a woman who looked like she’d seen more than her fair share of combat. He almost turned and spoke to her but resisted the impulse. That sort of action might be alright in Starfleet but here silence until addressed was the order of the day.

The senior Marine stood by the entrance to the transport as the teams boarded. Kevin had always felt that a leader should be in position to be the first to step off on any landing and the last to board when leaving. As he watched each one board he ran a last minute "check-list" through his head, double checking himself so he knew all were ready.

"Let's get this show on the road," he said.
