Is it really over?

Posted on Sun Sep 6th, 2009 @ 1:04am by Chief Warrant Officer Akina Jrez & Lieutenant JG T'Arjia D'Ras

Mission: Ties To Blood: Season 1, Episode 3.
Location: Science lab 3

Edkins, Jrez and Thalal took their findings straight to D'Ras. Vrell had returned to Sickbay to help with the wounded.
“What we're looking at is a fragment of a data file,” Jrez said. “It was extracted from the cortical node and neural processor of a dead drone. It's the last message the drone sent. We have six more like it. As we know, they've tapped into our systems and our databases. From what we can determine, the messages were only of low strength. I think they were being sent to the beacon to be compiled and sent back to the Delta Quadrant.”
“It suggests that the purpose of this raid might not only have been to physically take over the base,” Thalal said, “but to steal as much information as possible for analysis prior to setting up a full scale invasion.”
“What I didn't realise at first,” Jrez explained, “is that they're sending the data in multiple streams along a single coherent beam. They've adapted and utilised the technology in a way I haven't seen before. I had to go back and recalibrate before I could interpret the information. Credit where credit's due though. I was running a diagnostic while I took some down time but it was Edkins who spotted the anomaly. It's little wonder I missed it. They hid it all inside a standard Starfleet sub-space beam. The beautiful thing about it is that it's aimed straight at the relay station we'd use for sending messages back to Starfleet Command on Earth. The bad news is that they must have another ship out there to intercept the messages and divert them.
“If we hadn't been looking for it I doubt we'd have noticed it. As it was, we passed over it several times thinking Captain DuVuor was sending updates on our situation back to Command. It was only when Edkins jokingly remarked she was being unusually verbose for someone in the middle of a war zone that we investigated further.”
“It also suggests,” Thalal added, “that the Sphere we just faced was a diversion. It's purpose was to keep our minds focussed on it while they got on with the job of stealing our secrets and sending them back home; secrets like our weapons array and its deployment.”
“That and gestating a queen,” Jrez pointed out.
"And its lucky she was killed before the Sphere was taken down! Otherwise the Borg would know all about the anti-tachyon beam. As it stands, we still have that up our sleeves next time they come visiting."
