Protocol & the future

Mission: Human Nature. Season 1; Episode 6
Location: McArthur

Now that they were safely on their way and things were running smoothly, Jrez decided this was the time to broach a matter of some concern to him.

“Lieutenant Agara, a moment of your time if I may?”

"Of course Chief." Avo said from her room on the Korolev, COMM systems were much more direct there and Avo had little warning of Akina's message.

“I have a question on a matter of protocol. As Chief Science Officer on 611, you report to me – despite the rank discrepancy. I gather however that as this is a Vault team matter, I report to you.”

Avo looked at him curiously. "Alright, what can I do for your Chief? I didnt know there was a problem with the chain of command."

“That could lead to some complications. I assure you that I will defer to you on this mission as your rank requires and as your status as head of the Vault team likewise requires. However, I remain Chief Science Officer. Now that our relative positions are clear, I have a request of you. No doubt you’ve heard the rumours concerning the building of a new starbase alongside 611. If only half of what I’ve heard is true, it’s going to be far bigger and fulfill far more roles than 611 currently does. Apparently, our position near the Tholian and Gorn borders and their recently bellicose nature is giving Starfleet Command palpitations. It looks like it will mainly be the military side of things that are expanding but our respective departments look like they’ll be boosted too. Now, a Chief Science Officer, I make a fair fist of the administrative side of things. That having been said, I’m no great scientist. Serge Moschnost runs rings around me when he’s only operating at half capacity. I don’t know much about you yet but I suspect the same will be the case. Indeed, I’m hoping it will be so. Therefore, I’d like your input on where you see the Science department heading in its new role. That will include equipment and well as direction.”

Avo smiled. "Chief I wouldnt get your hair in a knot, Starfleet needs all the scientists it can get - amateurs or not - to keep up it's mission of New life and New civilizations or else being seen as hypocritical to the public," Avo noted.

Jrez almost snapped a reply about his lack of hair but, fortunately, saw the wry smile playing across Agara’s lips and the twinkle in her eyes. I think I might get to like this person, he thought. We might well be able to work together for the betterment of both sections.
