Sickbay Wires

Mission: Wolf In The Fold. Season 2, Episode 1
Location: Sickbay

Sandra sat holding the case of tools thinking about nothing in particular. It had been half an hour since she'd been sent here with Fletcher to see if there was anything they could do for the electronics in sickbay. The work was boring as the lithe young man was up to his waist in a bulkhead trying to get at a blown relay, leaving Sandra to sit and wait for his call for the next tool.

She watched as Tank, the giant Orion, waddled past with a huge lump of metal in his arms.

Her idle musings were interrupted by a hand on her knee, which she automatically slapped lightly with her hand. Fletcher emerged from the bulkhead, not a look of guilt on his face. "Can I get a 7 an' 6 wretch?" he asked, hand held out.

"Here you go," Sandra replied as she lifted it from its slot in the case.

Fletcher sat back on his haunches. "Strange ain't it? How we came to be here, I mean," he said suddenly. "Well, how did the Gorn overrun 611 so quickly? How did they get that close without us seeing them, last I heard they didn't have cloaking devices," he added when Sandra had shrugged.

"Don't tell me you think there is some conspiracy going on?" Sandra said rolling her eyes. Under normal circumstances talking to a superior like that would be frowned on. Fletcher wasn't big on protocol and preferred people talking straight to him.

"Damn odd if you ask me," he said with a tiny shrug before slipping back into the bulkhead.

Sandra sat and thought about what Fletcher had said. She didn't know much about ship based equipment or what the Gorn were capable of, except on the battlefield. Whats more, it wasn't her place to think about such things and was surprised at Fletcher taking an interest in, firstly, what had happened and, secondly, what she thought about it all.

"Try the console now!" came the muffled shout from inside the wall.

Sure enough the once dead console on the wall was flickering into life. She tapped a few random commands into it but nothing seemed to happen. A few sparks flew from it before a small explosion rippled along the edge, making her cringe back from it.

"Are you okay in there?" she asked Fletcher.

He shuffled out of the bulkhead. "Yeah, but I think I burnt my hand." He sniffed at it. "Yeah, that's me burning. Bloody Spoonhead engineering. It makes even the Klingons engineering prowess look like it was the work of masters. I'll be back in a few, going to find a nurse."

The console flickered on again followed by several others along the wall. Sandra sighed and sat on what passed for a Cardassian biobed and thought about what Fletcher had said about the Gorn. Just how did they get so close to 611?
